Meet HCC’s Business Coach and Queen of Realizing Opportunity
At Honor Code Creative, we have a sure sign that coaching is in order: when the client looks at the proposal and can’t figure out where to begin! Everything we do works when the client gets it, wants it, and feels ready. Uncertainty at the gate means you’re not quite there, and that’s one of the key moments when we bring in Sally Marrer.
We’ve known Sally since what feels like forever ago when we were at Rue La La together, launching the kids’ business. Her retail acumen just blows us away (among other credentials, she built the beauty business for TJX that continues to be a key revenue driver today, and she was selected to launch the first-ever TJX European Buying Office).
HCC coaching is often a joint effort with Sally and HCC founder Rachel Solomon. Together we’re able to bring on the “aha” and make the next move clear — even when it’s a next move that sometimes surprises both us … and the client!
HCC: How would you describe what you do?
SM: I’m frequently with a large-scale retail client where I coach techniques and strategies from the VP level up, focused on harnessing unseen opportunity and developing lines of business. I also create and roll out workshops and seminars, and actively teach the inner workings of their sales model from my own experience. Recently, I’ve brought on another consultant whom I coach and support.
I am also a certified professional coach, helping people move forward in their professional and personal lives in private or team sessions.
What drives you to do your best work?
Pride drives me. I want to do and be the very best. Accomplishment drives me. The sense that I can help a business or a person advance is satisfying. And building a business drives me. I love what I do. I’ve been in retail for over 35 years. I have a passion for the industry, off-price in particular.
What is the most challenging part of your job?
The most challenging part is when I see so much opportunity for my client, but I don’t see them effectuate change and realize the results as quickly as I’d like! Right now, I’m getting creative in my approach and looking for ways to remove those barriers to change.
How do you break the ice with a new client?
Lots of listening. I believe in the 70/30 rule. They talk 70%; I listen 70% - talking no more than 30%. I also like to develop a more personal relationship first, finding common bonds and interests. Conversation over a lunch helps keep things relaxed.
What’s the most satisfying part of your job?
Using my skills. Seeing others move forward and develop.
What do you hope a client takes away from a session with you?
Action! Concrete, positive things they can do to move the needle. I also want them to become versed in identifying these actions and holding themselves accountable.
Do you have a personal mantra?
“Done is better than perfect.”
How do to keep clients focused?
I’ve developed skills and strategies to help move the session along and keep the client centered. Having an agenda is important! When coaching one on one, I love to have a phone session. This gets rid of all non-verbal cues.
What’s in your work bag?
My diary, laptop, pens, pencils and butterscotch candies.
