Last week was a good week in outfits for me (I mean
gave it a shoutout and she is my arbiter of cool), and I felt that way this week too — and I think a few things are happening. One, I think I’ve gotten better at style. You know my longstanding hot take is that style isn’t “you have it or you don’t” — style is a muscle you can work out. I do a lot of that.POV: Style CAN be learned. And this is how we practice.
One of the things I hate to see most in style writing is that old “you either have it or you don’t” trope. Grrrr. As with most cucumber cutting, “you either have it or you don’t” is a phrase often spoken by someone deeply fearful that their personal style is all they have to offer, that their ideas will run out, or that it’s a zero sum game. Also, I think your style and/or your satisfaction with your style can improve as you know yourself better, and aging is good for that.
And then also: I feel better in my skin, less shoved into things the past ten days or so. I think this is because of what I’m calling “body tenderness” - that is, giving my body nice things like greens and whole foods and wayyyyyy less alcohol. You see me talking about my ass size — but that’s not being down on myself! I appreciate that I work out and am strong there. It’s ok for me to also be realistic about how I want clothes to fall over that (it? her?) nicely.
