What I wore all week: 11 looks, lots of secondhand links + more.
This week's theme: In with the old.
Process with me for one sec. A simple idea.
The more I add to my closet, the less I will wear beautiful things I’ve selected along the way.
I put that in the first person to get you to read it and feel yourself in it. End of months are always think-y for me. Especially this year, 2024, when I’ve set out to be way more conscious of my shopping habits. And this week, I really dug deep (literally) because in outfit planning (currently do this Sundays on IG; here’s the relevant ep), I took a cue from a recent
piece (this one) and suggested we all dress around the 5 oldest things in our closets. It meant digging out those oldest things. Realizing that I don’t in fact hold onto things as long as I’d like and imagine I do. Some things I thought were “old” were from 2020. And it meant sitting in the realization that I have these items I selected not long ago and don’t get a chance to wear. Every time I add more, it compounds the problem. This was a chance to treasure these pieces from the past, ideally adoring them into the present.
MONDAY
What: Ralph Lauren shirt. (Here’s one I am loving right now). Vintage secondhand 90s men’s Levis 505s size 36, made into cutoffs. Secondhand Prada bag. Hermes Takara sandals (secondhand 9.5 here, 38. — but the Genius seems to be the newer version and you can get it new for less!) Vintage Cartier scarf from an auction, one of the oldest things in my closet. How cool is this one? I am obsessed. (Also they are Dior prescription glasses.)
Why: No meetings, just a working day. I love denim on denim, and I had in my head inspiration from my friend Rose and others around a silk scarf as a sort of sideways belt.
Outcome: I like the way it looks, but something felt slightly off. There was no magic for me. Right before leaving I tried all these different shoes on; maybe it’s something in the shoe. I think *maybe* it’s time to sell this shoe. I LOVE the comfort; I bought it for that reason. But I only like it with pants on me. It might be the way the scarf (which is not that big) hits my high waist, losing the swagger of the shorts that I bought to be low slung. I would try this again, though! Maybe with a loafer and a sock. Or long pants.
p.s. Any time you see me or anyone else looking slightly pigeon toed in a selfie it’s a sure sign that we are trying to make something flattering. Sigh.
Also I was craving more softness and comfort on my body this day. I changed into the below when I got home and it was a relief.
