Right. So we are right now visiting Mexico City (I’ve been living and working here) and last night we learned we couldn’t go on our tour of the Jewish synagogue and historic area because of terrorist threats. I’d already held off meetings, so we decided to go to the Memory and Tolerance Museum. I wasn’t prepared for just how deeply affecting it would be, in particular stepping onto one of the actual cattle cars that took Jews to the concentration camps. And then learning far more than I had known before about genocides in other countries that are happening to this day. It was an experience that left me feeling raw and weak and speechless. And afterward, I took myself to a cafe and ate comfort food and smiled at people and their dogs. And then went to research this story.
I like to write these weekend reading pieces as a way of thanking subscribers for the community you give, and for your belief in me and what I’m doing here, and I’ve been wanting to write this one for a bit. It didn’t go as planned.
