Where are we on "investment dressing"?
Don't quit your day(trader?) job. But do quit other ppls' opinions in service of what you love.
On and off, I think about “investment dressing” as a notion, and this beautifully explored essay — plus a little something in Amy Smilovic’s stories (more on that below) — has me thinking about it again.
I think “investment dressing” was probably a term coined by some brand, and a brilliant one at that. It gets us to justify purchases with this idea that in one way or another we’re “investing,” which feels smart, rational, and future-oriented — rather than shopping, which can feel guilty, impetuous, emotional.
So we tell ourselves, oh no, we’re being “good,” we’re “investment dressing.”
Of course people who do actual investing laugh at this!
Investment dressing is not good as a career prospect.
