Wow! I’m sharing with every woman I know. I am the person who always shops for every event WITH FAIL. I’m going to follow your wisdom and shop from my closet tomorrow. Stay tuned…
I LOVE the 8th grade graduation and was thinking of wearing my neutral shade Dagmar dress! This is also a great reminder to do a jewelry inventory! I have some great giant cuffs from an silversmith my mom loved in the 70/80s. Truly “heritage” and “joyful” all at once.
A great article, and I fully fully agree. Now is the time to be comfortable, to feel genuine, true to myself and my style DNA, and to be frugal too. I used to attend many film business events (I'm now an indie producer but used to work for major companies) and knew two things for sure: firstly, that I couldn't compete with the talent on the red carpet (with their army of stylists, loaned gowns and jewellery, etc.), and secondly that I didn't have money to burn. My solution was to only buy vintage or resale clothes. Knowing that nobody else would be wearing these kind of gems instantly made me feel like I was owning my look. And then I progressed to shopping my closet and playing around with all the interesting stuff I already owned, mixing things up. I'm 100% with you Rachel.
Thank you for this, it is genius. I am that person who is guilty of buying dresses for events. And rarely wearing them again, and generally feeling lousy wearing them. With a few exceptions. I’m not a good accessorizer. The list is so helpful. I typically dread events! Love the idea of simply being kind and generous, and skipping altogether. Whew! Saving this one!
Taking your backyard weeding reception to heart and totally wearing a version of what you posted. White Tibi top and beige skirt with a bunch of bracelets and metallic flat sandals. Skirt and sleeveless top will insure I'm not roasting in VA in June. Love the no shopping advice. Do you find that sometimes when you buy an event outfit, you calm down enough to actually identify things in the closet that work better? This has happened to me more than once (why don't I learn???) and is not a crisis if what you bought is returnable, but still is a waste of energy.
Very pragmatic yet fun and exciting advice. It’s an exercise that challenges creativity and puts our brain to work. Plus no spending money How wonderful 💕
